Our journey began a few years ago when one of our pups started experiencing severe health issues. Our Lhasa mix was having grand mal seizures every 12-14 days on average. We quickly started reaching out to as many specialists as we could for advice. After an exhaustive search, we ended up working with a highly qualified medical team in Denver, CO.  Working with experts, we were able to reduce the frequency of his seizures significantly. But we wanted the seizures gone for good for our little fluffy boy!

So, we kept researching and talking to as many experts as possible. We quickly realized it was time to try a different approach to how we were feeding our dogs. After more exploration, we decided that fresh was the best option for our furry family members.

We attempted to make our own home cooked dog food, but it was extremely time consuming. We then tried a few different fresh dog food companies, but the dog food meal services that we tried just didn’t check all the boxes that we were looking for in our pups’ diet.

So we decided it was time to create our own recipe and start cooking again. We were pretty happy with our home cooked dog food, but we really wanted to do it right and share this with other pet parents. So we partnered with a group of highly qualified and talented veterinary nutritionists and culinary experts who all have a passion for helping animals to work with us to launch our vision of a healthy, balanced, wholesome, and delicious dog food.

The best news of all, our little buddy has now been seizure free for over 3 years!

All of Breck & Bailey’s recipes are gently cooked in a human-grade commercial kitchen by experienced culinary professionals with ingredients that have passed the standards necessary for human consumption and have been sourced from trusted US suppliers. (we also use organic ingredients when possible.)

Each of our recipes are carefully formulated by board-certified veterinary nutritionists and meet AAFCO’s requirements for a complete & balanced diet. Our ingredients are fresh and human-grade, meaning we do not use anything artificial or “feed-grade”.

Yes! Our recipes are formulated according to the nutritional levels established by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) and are complete & balanced for all life stages. Learn more about our nutritionist on our about us page.

Even though many people consume grain free diets and thrive on them, through extensive research we have learned that what may be good for humans may not always be great for our canine companions.

Grain-free diets related to dogs have been in the news recently and there is quite a bit of controversy and confusion over whether grain free diets can lead to a taurine deficiency which may cause DCM (Canine Dilated Cardiomyopathy), a potentially fatal heart condition in which the muscles in a dog’s heart become weakened and cannot pump effectively causing an enlarged heart. The FDA is conducting an ongoing investigation on this subject and has announced a possible link between DCM and grain-free diets in dogs. We have extensively researched DCM through our close work with our veterinary nutritionist partners, and have worked hard to create a healthy, safe and balanced recipe.

Whole grains are an excellent source of protein, fiber, and vitamins. Here at Breck & Bailey, we went a step further by offering ancient grains such as quinoa and millet in our meals. Ancient grains are whole grains, but they have remained unmodified over the last several hundred years. So nutritionally speaking, they are better for bodies than refined grains.

Did you know that Quinoa is a complete protein and is also a gluten free grain? Quinoa is also an excellent source of magnesium, phosphorus, manganese, and folic acid.

Millet packs a punch with its nutrient offerings and is an excellent source of manganese, which studies have shown can promote bone and brain health, and can help regulate inflammation. Another bonus? It is gluten free as well!

Breck and Bailey uses ancient whole grains as part of our balanced meals to provide digestible nutrients that are crucial to your dog’s overall health. We love the old adage, keep it simple. Using ancient grains in combination with whole food, human grade ingredients without adding preservatives or chemicals, is one way we can help to keep your tail wagging friend living their healthiest life.

Fresh dog food and raw dog food both may be better for dogs when compared to processed dog foods. Raw dog food however has been linked to various pathogens such as E. coli, Salmonella, and Listeria which can also be shed in feces resulting in possible human exposure and infection. Studies show that raw dog food diets may not contain enough calcium or phosphorus, which can affect bones so if you choose a raw diet, please make sure to check the ingredients. A raw dog food diet is not recommended for puppies, immunocompromised dogs, dogs with cancer, or senior dogs.

Breck & Bailey’s meals are gently cooked in small batches with whole food, human-grade ingredients and are packed with nutrients that are 100% complete and balanced. Gently cooking our vegetables such as carrots and broccoli increases antioxidant activity and increases absorption of nutrients. And it tastes great too! From picky pups to aging seniors down to puppies, our fresh meals are relished by all (we pet parents have tasted them all, yum!).

We hope you do! Most veterinarians will agree that a diet composed of fresh, nutrient dense whole food ingredients is good for a dog’s health and longevity. Your vet will take satisfaction in knowing that our recipes are formulated by a team of veterinary nutritionists and are 100% complete and balanced, with no added preservatives or chemicals.

A sudden change in diet can cause tummy issues in some of our furry friends, no matter how healthy the new food is. So, it’s a good idea to slowly transition to a new diet.

Here is what we recommend for transitioning your dog to our food:

Day 1:  Serve as a treat/snack/cookie whatever you want to call it! Get them excited to try their new food! This is a good trick for picky eaters!

Days 2-3: Serve 25% of Breck & Bailey and 75% of their old dog food.

Days 4-5: Serve 50% Breck & Bailey and 50% of their old dog food.

Days 6 – 7: Serve 75% Breck & Bailey and 25% of their old dog food.

Day 8 and beyond: 100% Breck and Bailey

Fresh food isn’t the cheapest dog food on the market and we may be biased, but we feel fresh is best!

All of our full meals are calculated to the gram, so pricing for every dog can be different and our shipping cadence will vary depending on how much your pup eats.

For an average sized dog,  it's roughly equal to the cost of a grande pumpkin spice latte from a national chain.

For most cost effective options please refer to our toppers question above.

Yes - Please consult your veterinarian if your animal needs a prescription diet.

We have developed a proprietary algorithm with our team of veterinary nutritionists which is used to ensure your pup is consuming the exact amount of calories per day based on your pet’s age and weight. Puppies are slightly different because of their rapid growth and will have different caloric needs, so we will work with you on customizing a meal plan for your puppy.

Your welcome box will come with a food scale that can be used to measure out your pup’s exact portion.

We are happy to work directly with you if you have any questions or would like to customize your pups caloric needs.  For example if you tell us “my dog is a triathlete who runs 16 miles per day” or my dog is 14lbs overweight, we would work with you and or your vet to adjust the daily calories for your dog's specific needs. We’re dog nerds and would love to work with you or your vet to build out a custom feeding plan. Reach out to us at Bark@breckandbailey.com if you have any questions.

Once defrosted, sealed trays will stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to 8 days. Once the tray is opened, use within 4 days. Food will stay fresh in the freezer for up to 6 months.

It is always a good idea to consult with your veterinarian if dealing with a doggie medical issue before switching food.
